The French government has asked Renault to adapt part of its factories for military drone production, as part of a plan to involve the civil industry in large defense orders.

However, the proposal divides opinions within the automaker, as many workers claim they were hired to produce cars, not weapons. The diversity of the workforce, which includes foreigners and even Russian citizens, makes the issue even more sensitive.

According to union representatives, the first drone production units are expected to be installed in Slovenia, with the possibility of expanding to France. The shift, in addition to causing internal tensions, could expose the company to new cyberattacks due to its direct involvement in the military industry.

So far, Renault’s management has not made a definitive decision regarding the proposal presented by the Ministry of Defense.

At the same time, the automaker is also studying the possibility of manufacturing drones in Ukraine. The initial plan includes partnerships with small and medium-sized French defense companies, with the expectation of eventually opening its own units in Ukrainian territory.

In a statement, Renault confirmed the French government’s request but emphasized that discussions are ongoing and no final decision has been announced.
